What does the role entail?

Our Railway Ecologists meticulously maintain a healthy, planet-friendly balance between our trains and Mother Nature. Whether it’s studying habitats or protecting animals like bats, badgers, or butterflies, they find exciting new ways for trains and wildlife (including its natural habitat) to safely coexist.

Skills Required:

Problem solving – step 9
Creativity – step 12
Teamwork – step 11

What was your educational pathway?

I studied biology before specialising in biodiversity and conservation, gaining invaluable hands-on experience through volunteering with local charities. This gave me practical experience working with wildlife and habitats, which eventually helped me secure my role in railway ecology. The learning never stops and I continue to expand my knowledge through various CPD courses.

What do you love about the role?

What I love most about my job is the perfect mix of problem-solving, wildlife conservation, and working with people. I get to protect nature while ensuring railway projects run smoothly, see incredible animals up close, and share my passion with people from all backgrounds. It’s incredibly rewarding to make a real difference for both wildlife and people—whether it’s relocating badgers, advising on conservation measures, or inspiring others to care about nature!
