stories Aiden Anderson – Health & Safety Advisor Find your career

What does the role entail?

I support the management of British Transport Police’s health and safety in specialist operations department and headquarters. This includes a such wide array of different tasks, however in a nutshell the aim is to keep the officers and staff who keep the railway safe, safe!

Skills Required:

Problem Solving
Teamwork
Adapting

What was your educational pathway?

I took an unorthodox path. I didn’t leave school with many qualifications and worked in a factory for a few years where I fell into health and safety, whist studying my diploma I volunteered out of hours to assist in health and safety duties.

Still with very little experience, I reached out to the then-Head of Safety asking for some work experience on LinkedIN, and I’ve been here since. This highlights one of my favourite things about BTP and the rail industry; the chances they take in developing people!

What do you love about the role?

I love the variety. I get the opportunity to support our specialist teams such as Armed Policing, Dog Section, Specialist Response Unit, all the way through to all our corporate functions and everything in between.

Since the day I started there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t met someone new or learnt something I didn’t know the day before. The different work streams are almost endless and the exposure to it all you get in this role is something that I also love.
