What is work experience?
Work experience is a fantastic way for you to gain exposure to real-world workplaces and careers. It's short placement with an organisation in rail that allows you to observe and participate in the daily activities of a workplace. This can be crucial step in understanding what careers align with your interests and aspirations.
You could be shadowing engineers, conductors, technicians, project managers, signallers, data analysts – to name a few! You will get to shadow many different professions during your work experience placement.
How do I find work experience?
Routes into Rail has partnered with Springpod to create a free virtual work experience programme that helps you learn about the different careers available in rail. The 10-hour programme gives you a deeper insight into working in the industry and focuses on the most in-demand rail roles. It consists of information, fun activities and quizzes – and you can contact real people working in rail if you have any questions.
Rail companies may advertise in-person work experience opportunities on their websites, or you can arrange placements through your school, college, training provider or university.
You can also organise your won work experience by researching companies you are interested in. If they don't have work experience opportunities, consider writing a formal email explaining why you would like to apply for work experience, highlighting your current skills and those you wish to develop.
Sign up for job alerts, which include updates on work experience opportunities.
