Why were you interested in the Network Rail graduate scheme?

I liked that it would allow me to experience different areas of the business through placements. I didn’t know what type of work I would enjoy so the opportunity to try different things was a huge positive. Since starting the scheme I’ve found that working in different departments has also helped me understand how the company operates and increased my connections.

What was the interview process like?

For the interview, I was asked to prepare a presentation on a topic I was passionate about, which I presented to two Network Rail interviewers. The interviewers asked me some questions about the presentation, how I would react in certain situations and some technical questions related to the railway. Then I had the opportunity to ask about the graduate scheme. I also had to complete a project planning group-based task with the other interviewees.

What sort of things do you do on the scheme? Is everyday the same? Or does your work differ each day?

Some days are the same, but most are different. I spend about 3-4 days in the office, having meetings with the team, and at least 1 or 2 days a week visiting different sites to meet with colleagues.

I also have the opportunity, as a graduate, to work on extracurricular projects such as STEM programmes and innovation competitions.

How much coursework do you have to do?

I complete quarterly reports and submit evidence for the IMechE’s MPDS (Monitored Professional Development Scheme). This is part of my work towards chartership.

What advice would you give to candidates applying for the graduate scheme?

Research Network Rail and the railway and reflect the Network Rail behaviours in your answers.

What tips and helpful information would you give graduates who are joining the grad scheme?

Write everything down. You don’t know what you might need to refer to later. Take as many opportunities as you can. This will help expand your experiences and you’ll no doubt meet some new people in the process, some of which you will bump into again!

If you could describe Network Rail in one word, what would it be?

Fascinating. I did not appreciate the complexities of the railway before I became part of it.

Would you recommend Network Rail to potential candidates?

Definitely! I have found I have had a lot more opportunities to learn, develop and expand on my experiences in comparison to previous employment.
