stories Jess Lippett – Freight Manager Find your career

What does the role entail?

The Freight Manager delivers the goods. They work with their customers, like supermarkets, building firms and medical suppliers, to move their products around the country by rail.

This means we get everything we need, when we need it – from bananas to bricks, sand to sweeties and medicines to metal.

Keeping goods moving is vital for the UK’s supply chain and best of all, doing it by rail is cleaner and greener than trucks or lorries.

What was your educational pathway?

I studied, English Literature, History and Media Studies at A Level. I had a stab at both Law and Business Management and Marketing at University before deciding that University wasn’t for me and ventured out into the world of hospitality before landing a job with a Freight Operator in customer services.

What do you love about the role?

Every day is different, one day I can be head to toe in orange visiting customers to discuss safety and growth opportunities, whereas the next I can be up on stage speaking to different stakeholders about why freight is so important (both to the environment and economy!).We move so many different commodities on the railway, from supermarket goods to aggregates to domestic waste – seeing how important the railway is to all these sectors keeps the job interesting.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love musicals, so going to the theatre to see a production is my first choice for an evening well spent!
