I oversee the installation of the overhead line infrastructure, making sure it is installed correctly as per the approved design.
What do you enjoy about your role?
That no day is the same. Within Overhead Line Engineering (OLE), there is always a new and different challenge to overcome. The team I work wish is also a big plus. When you are surrounded by a group of people who do not care that you are a female it really helps you see that gender doesn’t matter.
What skills do you need to succeed in your role?
You need problem solving skills, good communication skills and confidence.
What path did you take to get here?
I joined VolkerRail straight after sixth form, to complete my Level 3 BTEC & NVQ in Mechanical Engineering, being one of the four apprentices chosen by VolkerRail to be placed on Network Rail’s advanced apprenticeship scheme.
Since finishing that apprenticeship I’m now completing the next stage (a Level 4) at the the National College for Advanced Transport and Infrastructure.
How would you advise someone considering a career in rail?
The best advice I could give anyone is just go for it. There are so many opportunities out there to develop new skills, whether it being an apprenticeship or further education. Also pick a great company. VolkerRail has always supported me and encouraged my development, which has really help my confidence.
