In August 2023, Routes into Rail and Springpod created a virtual work experience programme that helps students learn about the different careers available in rail.

The 10-hour programme gives students a deeper insight into working in the industry and focuses on the most in-demand roles in rail. It consists of information, fun activities and quizzes – and gives students the ability to contact real people working in rail if they have questions.

Since its launch, more than 550 students have enrolled from all over the UK.

  • 62% of students rated their awareness of the industry as ‘excellent’ on completing the programme (up from 5% before the programme)
  • 70% rated themselves as ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to consider a career in rail after completing the programme (up from 46% before the programme)
  • On completing the programme, 84% of students said they were confident about finding a job in the future (up from 57% before the programme)

The programme is available for anyone aged 15+ and is free of charge. You will need to make an account with Springpod and apply for the programme, which is quick and simple to do. Once you are registered, you can complete the course at your own pace.
